Course Description

Module One


 

The Mandatory Reporting for Mental Health Professionals course is designed to provide social workers and other mental health professionals with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of their legal and ethical obligations regarding the reporting of child abuse, elder abuse, and domestic violence. This course aims to equip social workers and other mental health professionals with the necessary skills and competencies to identify and respond appropriately to situations where mandatory reporting is required.


There are no specific prerequisites for this course. It is open to social work professionals and other mental health professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to social work and mental health professional ethics.



Course Objectives:

  1. Understand, describe, and explain the legal and ethical frameworks surrounding mandatory reporting for social workers and other mental health professional.

  2. Identify, describe, and explain the signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with child abuse, elder abuse, and domestic violence.

  3. Develop the ability to assess and evaluate situations to determine the need for mandatory reporting.

  4. Familiarize yourself with the reporting procedures and protocols specific to different jurisdictions. (How to know where to look)

  5. Enhance communication skills to effectively engage with clients, colleagues, and relevant authorities in reporting cases.

  6. Recognize the impact of mandatory reporting on social work and other mental health professional practices and client relationships.

  7. Explore the ethical dilemmas and considerations that may arise in the context of mandatory reporting.

Module Two

In an increasingly digital world, mental health professionals are confronted with the unique ethical challenges of providing therapy through telehealth platforms. This course, "Ethical Approach to Telehealth as a Therapist," is designed to equip therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate these challenges ethically and effectively. Participants will delve into the intricacies of informed consent, maintaining confidentiality, establishing professional boundaries, and ensuring cultural sensitivity in the telehealth context. Through real-world case studies and interactive discussions, this course will empower therapists to provide high-quality, ethically sound telehealth services while upholding the principles of client welfare and professional integrity. Whether you're an experienced practitioner transitioning to telehealth or a newcomer to the field, this course will help you build a strong ethical foundation for your telehealth practice.

The course “Social Media and Ethical Practice in therapy” explores the intersection of social media and ethics, delving into the complex ethical considerations that arise in the era of digital communication. Participants will critically examine the ethical implications of various social media practices, including issues such as privacy, online harassment,  and the impact of algorithms on content dissemination..


Module Three

The course also aims to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to navigate these ethical dilemmas responsibly. By analyzing real-world examples and engaging in ethical decision-making exercises, participants will develop a framework for making ethically informed choices in their own social media use and strategy. Ultimately, the course seeks to foster a sense of social responsibility among participants, encouraging them to contribute to a more ethical and equitable digital society.


This is a beginner’s level course and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to mental health professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to navigating social media and ethical decision-making.

Lead Trainer Sharea Farmer, LCSW

Sharea Farmer is the Founder and Executive Director of RS Counseling & Wellness with over 20 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker. Her expertise in both clinical and administration has allowed her to work in the private and public sectors as an advocate for employee wellness, Diversity & Inclusion, Race Equity, and Trauma-Informed Practices. Her unique practice that focuses on empowerment and education creates transformative wellness for her clients that range from executive leadership teams to supervisors to staff. RS Wellness has developed employee resilience plans and trauma-informed care programs for state and public health agencies, as well as educational groups, both locally and nationally. Sharea received a BA in Sociology from Rider University and a Master’s of Social Work from Rutgers. She is an adjunct professor at Rutgers where she’s been teaching since 2014. She is on the World Childhood Foundation Advisory Board for a two-year term from 2021-2023. On the board, she’ll have the chance to use the Equity & Inclusion lens to determine program eligibility for funding in the area of preventing sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Sharea lives in New Jersey with her husband. She enjoys all things basketball, live NBA games, traveling, coloring, and spending time with family and friends. Trainer Faith Iloka, LAC

Faith E. Iloka (she/her) is a Nigerian Mental Health Counselor who employs a collaborative and client-centered approach in her work with clients. Faith utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, art therapy, feminist-therapy, multicultural, and trauma-informed interventions to support and empower clients towards increased self-awareness and healthy coping skills. Faith’s interests lie at the intersections of mental health and wellness, creative arts, and race. Faith also incorporates spirituality as it relates to clients’ unique backgrounds and experiences. Faith works with clients to design an individualized treatment plan to help clients feel heard and held, and support clients as they transition from “surviving” to “thriving”. Faith received her BA in African American Studies from Princeton University and her Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Mental Health/Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Faith completed her Masters Externship at Baruch College Counseling Center. Faith’s areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, grief, multicultural issues, romantic/interpersonal relationship issues, self-esteem, stress/anger management, and trauma/racial trauma. Faith enjoys afrobeats, playwriting, traveling, thrifting/fashion, and trying new foods.

Lead Trainers Alexis Frederick-Bouy, MA MEd & Adreeonah Mundy, LPC

Alexis Frederick-Bouy, is a Sexologist and Mental health Therapist. Alexis’ educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from Bloomsburg University, a Master of Arts in Community Psychology and Social Change from Pennsylvania State University, and a Master of Education in Human Sexuality Studies from Widener University. She served the mental health community for over ten years focusing on family dynamics emphasizing attachment, communication, emotional regulation, executive functioning, and resource building. Alexis' passion is to educate and empower individuals to live a fulfilling life by challenging survival thinking and living patterns and replacing them with thriving patterns. Alexis is a wife and mother of two. Alexis is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. ************************************************************* Adreeonah Mundy is a licensed professional counselor and the owner of Being Made Well Counseling LLC, a private practice dedicated to empowering women through faith-based and clinical counseling. With licenses in both Pennsylvania and Georgia, Adreeonah specializes in helping women navigate relationship issues, imposter syndrome, work-life balance, spirituality, and challenges unique to creatives. Her approach seamlessly integrates psychological expertise with spiritual wisdom, offering holistic support to her clients. As a speaker, Adreeonah frequently participates in panels focused on mental health and spirituality, sharing her insights to uplift and inspire women. She is also a writer and mentor, committed to guiding others on their journeys toward emotional and spiritual well-being. Through her practice and public engagements, Adreeonah continues to make a profound impact on the lives of women seeking healing and growth.
