Course Description

The course “Supporting Clients with Substance Use Disorders (pt. 2): Harm Reduction Model” provides an insightful exploration of the Harm Reduction Model which can be used when supporting clients with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). The training will explore the principles and practices of the Harm Reduction Model including compassion, pragmatism, and individual empowerment. The training will delve into ways in which the Harm Reduction Model seeks to minimize the adverse consequences of substance use while prioritizing the overall well-being of clients.


This training provides a summary of the content that was referenced in part 1 of the training around supporting clients with substance use disorders. This course introduces the harm reduction model, explores the role of stigma and empathy, and covers practical applications of the harm reduction model. The training explores the challenges and benefits of using the harm reduction model and compares this to the recovery model covered in part one. 


This is a beginner’s level course and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to social work professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to  Substance Use Disorders and the Harm Reduction Model.


Learning Objectives & Agenda

  • Understand the principles and key components of the Harm Reduction Model in the context of substance use disorders.

  • Recognize the psychological and physiological aspects of addiction, and the importance of a non-judgmental approach in supporting individuals with substance use disorders.

  • Analyze the impact of stigma on individuals with substance use disorders and explore strategies to foster empathy and reduce societal stigma.

  • Explore practical applications of the Harm Reduction Model, including the implementation of needle exchange programs, safe injection sites, and access to harm reduction tools such as naloxone.

  • Examine the importance of collaboration and multidisciplinary support in providing holistic care to individuals with substance use disorders, including the integration of mental health services and peer support programs.

  • Evaluate the role of policy changes and community engagement in promoting harm reduction initiatives and reducing the stigma associated with substance use disorders.

  • Discuss the potential challenges and ethical considerations in implementing the Harm Reduction Model, and identify strategies to address these challenges.

Lead Trainer

Trainer Faith Iloka, LAC

Faith E. Iloka (she/her) is a Nigerian Mental Health Counselor who employs a collaborative and client-centered approach in her work with clients. Faith utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, art therapy, feminist-therapy, multicultural, and trauma-informed interventions to support and empower clients towards increased self-awareness and healthy coping skills. Faith’s interests lie at the intersections of mental health and wellness, creative arts, and race. Faith also incorporates spirituality as it relates to clients’ unique backgrounds and experiences. Faith works with clients to design an individualized treatment plan to help clients feel heard and held, and support clients as they transition from “surviving” to “thriving”. Faith received her BA in African American Studies from Princeton University and her Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Mental Health/Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Faith completed her Masters Externship at Baruch College Counseling Center. Faith’s areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, grief, multicultural issues, romantic/interpersonal relationship issues, self-esteem, stress/anger management, and trauma/racial trauma. Faith enjoys afrobeats, playwriting, traveling, thrifting/fashion, and trying new foods.

Certificates will be awarded after completion of the full Webinar and course evaluation.
