Course Description

The course “Supporting Undocumented Clients in the Therapeutic Setting” highlights the importance of advocacy work within the role of social workers and mental health professionals. The training highlights the varying struggles that clients who are undocumented may experience and explores effective ways clinicians can support their clients.  


This training emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive and ethical approaches in supporting undocumented clients within the therapeutic setting. The training explores the challenges faced by undocumented individuals including legal, social, and economic barriers, and their impact on mental health and well-being. Participants will leave the session with understanding of what it means to be an advocate for undocumented clients, the limitations and possibilities of advocacy, and interventions that can be useful in trust building and maintaining a safe space for undocumented clients.

This is a beginner’s level course and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to social work professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to social justice advocacy and working with undocumented populations.

  • Understand the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of undocumented clients to provide culturally sensitive and competent care.

  • Identify the ethical considerations related to confidentiality, mandated reporting, and legal implications of working with undocumented clients.

  • Learn strategies for creating a safe and nonjudgmental space for undocumented clients, fostering trust, and promoting a sense of psychological safety.

  • Learn trauma-informed techniques and interventions tailored to the unique needs of undocumented clients

  • Encourage ongoing self-reflection on personal biases, cultural competence, and ethical practices when working with undocumented clients

  • Understand the significance of advocacy and collaboration with community organizations, legal experts, and other professionals to provide holistic support for undocumented clients

Lead Trainer

Trainer Faith Iloka, LAC

Faith E. Iloka (she/her) is a Nigerian Mental Health Counselor who employs a collaborative and client-centered approach in her work with clients. Faith utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, art therapy, feminist-therapy, multicultural, and trauma-informed interventions to support and empower clients towards increased self-awareness and healthy coping skills. Faith’s interests lie at the intersections of mental health and wellness, creative arts, and race. Faith also incorporates spirituality as it relates to clients’ unique backgrounds and experiences. Faith works with clients to design an individualized treatment plan to help clients feel heard and held, and support clients as they transition from “surviving” to “thriving”. Faith received her BA in African American Studies from Princeton University and her Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Mental Health/Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Faith completed her Masters Externship at Baruch College Counseling Center. Faith’s areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, grief, multicultural issues, romantic/interpersonal relationship issues, self-esteem, stress/anger management, and trauma/racial trauma. Faith enjoys afrobeats, playwriting, traveling, thrifting/fashion, and trying new foods.

Certificates will be awarded after completion of the full Webinar and course evaluation.
