Course Description

This course is designed for mental health clinicians and health care professionals to enrich their understanding of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and help them gain proficiency in applying DBT interventions. A user-friendly, Wise Mind model that clinicians across community and private practice settings have effectively used across a spectrum of client diagnoses and challenges will be presented.


Particular attention will be paid to relevantly engaging and working with culturally and clinically diverse clients and with clients who are reluctant (or traditionally considered “resistant”). A trauma-informed lens will guide approaches for client skill acquisition and clinician use of self. Methods for incorporating dialectical behavior therapy into various practice settings will be discussed.


Ultimately, this lively, skill-based workshop will help you empower clients to address and work with reactive and distressing emotions mindfully, develop compassionate self-care skills, and locate sources of resilience in challenging times.


Brief Description:

The course is designed to provide mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) when working with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) clients. This course emphasizes the importance of cultural sensitivity and adapting DBT techniques to meet the unique needs of BIPOC individuals.


Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the significance of cultural sensitivity in therapy and its impact on therapeutic outcomes with BIPOC clients.

  2. Recognize the specific challenges faced by BIPOC individuals and how these challenges may affect their mental health.

  3. Explore the principles and techniques of DBT and their relevance to the cultural experiences of BIPOC clients.

  4. Learn strategies for adapting DBT interventions to align with the cultural values, beliefs, and preferences of BIPOC clients.

  5. Develop skills to establish a strong therapeutic alliance with BIPOC clients based on trust, respect, and cultural humility.

Executive Director Sharea Farmer, LCSW

Sharea Farmer is the Founder and Executive Director of RS Counseling & Wellness with over 20 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker. Her expertise in both clinical and administration has allowed her to work in the private and public sectors as an advocate for employee wellness, Diversity & Inclusion, Race Equity, and Trauma-Informed Practices. Her unique practice that focuses on empowerment and education creates transformative wellness for her clients that range from executive leadership teams to supervisors to staff. RS Wellness has developed employee resilience plans and trauma-informed care programs for state and public health agencies, as well as educational groups, both locally and nationally. Sharea received a BA in Sociology from Rider University and a Master’s of Social Work from Rutgers. She is an adjunct professor at Rutgers where she’s been teaching since 2014. She is on the World Childhood Foundation Advisory Board for a two-year term from 2021-2023. On the board, she’ll have the chance to use the Equity & Inclusion lens to determine program eligibility for funding in the area of preventing sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Sharea lives in New Jersey with her husband. She enjoys all things basketball, live NBA games, traveling, coloring, and spending time with family and friends.
