Course Description

Module One

The Suicide Prevention for Mental Health Professionals course is designed to equip social workers with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to effectively prevent suicide and support individuals at risk. This course explores the critical role of Mental Health Professionals in suicide prevention, providing practical strategies for assessment, intervention, and postvention. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks, case studies, interactive discussions, and experiential exercises, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of suicide prevention and develop the necessary competencies to make a positive impact in their professional practice.

 This course is designed for social workers, mental health professionals, counselors, and other professionals working in social services, community organizations, and healthcare settings. It is also suitable for graduate students pursuing degrees in social work or related fields.


Learning Objectives & Agenda

  • Understand the significance of suicide prevention and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.

  • Recognize risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors associated with suicide.

  • Develop skills in conducting thorough risk assessments and safety planning.

    Module Two: 

    The course “The Impact of Representation in Therapy” highlights the importance of representation in therapy and its impact on the lives of clients. This training explores suicide prevention in mental health counseling and the topics of accessibility to mental health care, multiculturalism, and warning signs for supporting clients from diverse and oppressed cultural backgrounds.  

    This training defines the key terms of representation and suicide prevention. The training also makes connections between representation and mental health, explores suicide as a global concern, and highlights the benefits of representation and cultural sensitivity within the therapeutic space. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in reflection around their own identities.

    This is a beginner’s level course and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to social work professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to Multiculturalism in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

    • Understand the concept of representation within the context of mental health counseling

    • Explore the significance of mental health counseling:

    • Identify barriers to accessing mental health counseling

    • Explain the link between representation and suicide prevention

  • Module Three

    Mental health professionals play a crucial role in the well-being of others, but often, they overlook their own self-care needs. This engaging 1-hour training, "Revitalize and Thrive: Nurturing Self-Care for Mental Health Professionals," is specifically designed to empower mental health practitioners with the essential self-care tools they need to maintain personal and professional balance. Our course combines interactive learning, real-life examples, and practical exercises to equip you with the skills to overcome stress, prevent burnout, and enhance your overall well-being.

    This course should particularly benefit social workers and other mental health professionals supporting clients who have been exposed to different individual, interpersonal, and community traumas. It will provide strategies for social workers and other mental health professionals to provide trauma-informed and culturally responsive support for clients. Receiving concrete support from helping professionals can assist those affected by trauma in positive and uplifting ways. By providing education and support, to social workers and other mental health professionals about their well-being and balance, then we can help clients heal and flourish beyond the experience.

    This is an intermediate-level course and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to social workers and other mental health professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to professional boundaries.

Lead Trainer

Trainer Faith Iloka, LAC

Faith E. Iloka (she/her) is a Nigerian Mental Health Counselor who employs a collaborative and client-centered approach in her work with clients. Faith utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, art therapy, feminist-therapy, multicultural, and trauma-informed interventions to support and empower clients towards increased self-awareness and healthy coping skills. Faith’s interests lie at the intersections of mental health and wellness, creative arts, and race. Faith also incorporates spirituality as it relates to clients’ unique backgrounds and experiences. Faith works with clients to design an individualized treatment plan to help clients feel heard and held, and support clients as they transition from “surviving” to “thriving”. Faith received her BA in African American Studies from Princeton University and her Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Mental Health/Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Faith completed her Masters Externship at Baruch College Counseling Center. Faith’s areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, grief, multicultural issues, romantic/interpersonal relationship issues, self-esteem, stress/anger management, and trauma/racial trauma. Faith enjoys afrobeats, playwriting, traveling, thrifting/fashion, and trying new foods.

Executive Director Sharea Farmer, LCSW

Sharea Farmer is the Founder and Executive Director of RS Counseling & Wellness with over 20 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker. Her expertise in both clinical and administration has allowed her to work in the private and public sectors as an advocate for employee wellness, Diversity & Inclusion, Race Equity, and Trauma-Informed Practices. Her unique practice that focuses on empowerment and education creates transformative wellness for her clients that range from executive leadership teams to supervisors to staff. RS Wellness has developed employee resilience plans and trauma-informed care programs for state and public health agencies, as well as educational groups, both locally and nationally. Sharea received a BA in Sociology from Rider University and a Master’s of Social Work from Rutgers. She is an adjunct professor at Rutgers where she’s been teaching since 2014. She is on the World Childhood Foundation Advisory Board for a two-year term from 2021-2023. On the board, she’ll have the chance to use the Equity & Inclusion lens to determine program eligibility for funding in the area of preventing sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Sharea lives in New Jersey with her husband. She enjoys all things basketball, live NBA games, traveling, coloring, and spending time with family and friends.
