The course “Comprehensive Screening and Interventions for Antepartum and Postpartum Clients: Best Practices in Maternal Mental Health” explores commonly used perinatal mental health screening tools, settings in which these tools should be used, presentation and interpretation of scores. Furthermore, this course will review clinical interventions that can be used for antepartum and postpartum individuals and support persons in clinical settings. These interventions should be based on clinical appropriateness including the clinicians scope of expertise and risk of harm.
This course will also briefly review health symptoms including key terms and criteria for diagnosing Postpartum Anxiety and Depressive disorders (PMADs). Additionally, participants will be able to provide support and make appropriate referrals to fully trained professionals trained in this area.
This is a beginner’s level course and there are no specific prerequisites for this course. The course is open to social workers, mental health professionals, students, and individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills related to antepartum and postpartum diagnosis.
Learning Objectives & Agenda
●To define and explain antepartum and postpartum period and the mental health criteria for diagnosis that fall into Postpartum and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)
● To review best practices on presentation of screening tools, appropriate settings
● To equip participants with the knowledge and resources to refer individuals experiencing PMADs to appropriate providers and resources
● To explore, compare and analyze evidenced based screeners: Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4), Postpartum depression Screening Scale (PDSS), Mood disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), brief screening tool and other trauma informed screening tools.
● To be able to apply evidence based psychotherapeutic treatment models in therapeutic settings
