Course Description


This course on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) with a Racial Equity Lens, Power, and Privilege with a System Lens is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of key concepts and practical strategies related to fostering inclusivity and equity within various systems. The course explores the intersectionality of race, power dynamics, and privilege, with a particular focus on creating a more equitable and just environment.

Participants will delve into critical topics such as systemic racism, implicit bias, white supremacy characteristics in the workplace, and the role of power and privilege in perpetuating inequities. The course adopts a multi-dimensional approach that combines theory, terms, and practical applications to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to champion diversity, promote equity, and foster inclusion.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understanding Racial Equity:

    • Define and articulate the concept of racial equity.
    • Explore historical and contemporary manifestations of systemic racism.
    • Develop awareness of the impact of racial disparities on individuals and communities.
  2. Power Dynamics and Privilege:

    • Examine the dynamics of power within various systems.
    • Identify and analyze the role of privilege in perpetuating inequality.
    • Foster an understanding of how power and privilege intersect with race.

  3. System Lens Approach:

    • Analyze systems and structures that contribute to inequity.
    • Explore strategies for dismantling and reforming systems to promote equity.
    • Develop skills to advocate for and contribute to systemic change.
  4. Implicit Bias and White Supremacy Characteristics in Workplace :

    • Identify and address unconscious biases and stereotypes.
    • Implement strategies to mitigate the impact of biases on decision-making processes.
    • Promote a culture of awareness and accountability.
  5. Action Planning:

    • Develop personalized action plans for promoting equity within specific contexts.
    • Cultivate skills to be an effective ally and advocate for marginalized communities.
    • Encourage ongoing self-reflection and commitment to continuous learning.

Trainer

Executive Director Sharea Farmer, LCSW

Sharea Farmer is the Founder and Executive Director of RS Counseling & Wellness with over 20 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker. Her expertise in both clinical and administration has allowed her to work in the private and public sectors as an advocate for employee wellness, Diversity & Inclusion, Race Equity, and Trauma-Informed Practices. Her unique practice that focuses on empowerment and education creates transformative wellness for her clients that range from executive leadership teams to supervisors to staff. RS Wellness has developed employee resilience plans and trauma-informed care programs for state and public health agencies, as well as educational groups, both locally and nationally. Sharea received a BA in Sociology from Rider University and a Master’s of Social Work from Rutgers. She is an adjunct professor at Rutgers where she’s been teaching since 2014. She is on the World Childhood Foundation Advisory Board for a two-year term from 2021-2023. On the board, she’ll have the chance to use the Equity & Inclusion lens to determine program eligibility for funding in the area of preventing sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Sharea lives in New Jersey with her husband. She enjoys all things basketball, live NBA games, traveling, coloring, and spending time with family and friends.
